At 1:45 PM on September 10, 2013, the Colorado State Patrol responded to a two-car crash on Colorado 17, approximately 5 miles south of Moffat in Saguache County.

A 2004 Subaru driven by Safiya Balekian, 63, of Crestone, was southbound on Colorado 17 when she lost control of the vehicle.  The vehicle crossed into the northbound lane where it was struck by a 2011 Toyota FJ Landcrusier driven by Steven Barry, 54, of San Diego California.  The Subaru traveled off the east side of the road where it came to rest facing northwest.  The Toyota came to rest in the northbound lane facing southeast.  After the crash, the Subaru became engulfed in flames.  Mrs. Balekian died as a result of her injuries sustained in the crash.  Mr. Barry and a female passenger, Sherry Rice, 51, also of San Diego, were transported to San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center.  Mr. Barry was later flown to St. Anthony’s in Denver with serious injuries.  Ms. Rice was admitted to San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
