CEOLP’s open monthly Zoom meeting

April 13 @ 7:00 pm

For the 15 years since the Crestone End of Life Project (CEOLP) held its first open-air cremation, members of the Crestone and Saguache County community have contributed their time, knowledge, and compassion to people who are near, or at, the end of life. Whether providing physical, emotional, social, or spiritual support to individuals and their families, committed volunteers are essential to sustaining CEOLP as a not-for-profit, non-denominational service organization for local residents.

All of us have our personal journeys to involvement with CEOLP. My initial interest stemmed from existential questions about death and dying, the inevitable destiny that awaits us all. It was not until the recent passing of a long-time friend and significant figure in my life, however, that I witnessed first-hand the unexpected beauty of the ceremonial funeral pyre and the emotional-spiritual release that followed. I was also inspired by how much CEOLP volunteers give of themselves to provide those in grief with a deeply meaningful experience—from supporting the family in preparing the body for repose to creating a well-coordinated cremation ceremony that reflected the wishes of the deceased and his family.

I came away from the experience wishing to be part of this community-driven effort. However, because I split my time between living in the Midwest and my place in the San Luis Valley, it was not possible to serve as a boots-on-the-ground volunteer. As it turns out, there are many levels of service in which volunteers engage. I recently assumed the role of volunteer coordinator, a task I can work on remotely. In this capacity, I serve as the point of contact for requests to volunteer, and inform interested community members about volunteer training opportunities, workshops, and other events.

CEOLP will be offering a number of trainings this coming spring and summer. The initial opportunity will be a “Meet and Greet” at the open-air pyre site and adjacent Natural Burial Ground. Anyone interested in volunteering will have an opportunity to meet up with experienced volunteers and CEOLP board members to learn about how a cremation ceremony or natural burial is implemented; and the various roles involved with the process.

Over the years, CEOLP has developed an extensive implementation manual, which has been revised several times, most recently last year. The manual covers each role, step-by-step. Once a person has decided which role they’d like to take on, they are paired with an experienced person to learn the role.  Every task, from parking attendant to fire team, is essential to providing a cremation or burial ceremony: We all serve together as one body.

CEOLP welcomes anyone who wishes to participate in any of a number of capacities. Meet like-minded volunteers at CEOLP’s open monthly Zoom meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7pm MT.
