July 4 Celebration – Crestone

July 4 @ 8:00 am - 8:00 pm

Crestone’s 4th of July celebration has been a town tradition for decades, bringing together old family members and new community members.  This year’s event will bring back many of the beloved traditions from past years, while creating a few new ones. If you are an early riser who likes to run, we have just the thing to kick off the festivities. Veteran marathon runner Chuck Smead, along with his wife Carol, this year in conjunction with the Crestone Running Club, will host this year’s 5K run/walk, beginning in front of the Cloud Station at 9am. Chuck.was a former marathon winner, and each year gives away one of his past trophies to the winner of this race.

Lining up at 11am at the corner of Golden Ave. and Cottonwood St., this year’s parade theme, “Interdependence Day”, will feature all of the amazing resource providers we have in our back yard to help make this valley so capable of remaining self-sustainable. To highlight this theme, this year’s grand Marshal is Nick Chambers, CEO of Valley Roots Food Hub. Nick starting working the Colorado-wide local food system with a buddy from the Front Range. As that company crashed and burned, the San Luis Valley Local Food Coalition was looking for a founding GM to start a food hub based out of the potato and quinoa capital of Mosca. Thus, the Valley Roots Food Hub was born with the interdependence of over 100 producers from all the primary agricultural regions of the state, together with countless value-based customers from Alamosa to Leadville, and Durango to Denver/Springs/Pueblo. With the impact of COVID changing the world of supply chains, the food hub’s more resilient model went into double time and made the connections that needed to be made to ensure the Colorado local food system is abundant, strong, and here to stay!

Finishing off the parade, the fire trucks will gather at the corner of Silver and Cottonwood, and commence the water fight. Water balloons will be on hand and water will only be sprayed in the designated wet zone area next to the old Crestone Brewery.

Dozens of artists and craftspeople will be on hand at the event, with music throughout the day starting with the National Anthem performed by Meryl Ennis, followed by the Blue Rooster, Duo Andy and Laura, Shumei’s HIKARI Taiko and regional favorites Ponder the Albatross and the Copper Children. Rounding off the music will be the transcendental electronic set by Treaphort.

In between music sets, beginning at  at 4:30pm, we will start the Soap Box Derby races! First up will be the qualifying race at 4:30pm, where cars will one by one go down the track to prove that they can both steer and stop. Then at 6:30pm, racers will compete 2-at-a-time down the hill. First place will win a $500 grand price, sponsored by Mountainside Realty. Entrance forms and rules may be found at Town Hall or by contacting Nick.

We hope that you will join us in celebrating Interdependence Day at this year’s Crestone 4th of July event, and look forward to reconnecting with friends and family, old and new.
