Mindful Land Use Solution Session

March 3 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

We have been working hard to have our voices heard and create solutions that are more representative of our diverse County when it comes to housing and sanitation. We apologize that the County did not acknowledge the online callers or give you time to speak.  Despite the confusing process with meetings and work sessions, we are happy with how our County Commissioners are responding to our requests for engagement.  We still have a lot of work to do, so please review this information and read to the end for upcoming meetings.  Here are the latest updates on each of these codes.

XIII.4.10. A sewage disposal permit must be acquired and installed in accordance with approval by the appropriate government agency and finalized with the Saguache County Land Use Office before applying for a construction permit. Composting toilets, incinerating toilets, and vault systems are not permittable or allowed in Saguache County.  (This item has been moved from the Planning Commission to the County Commissioners for approval.  We are requesting a presentation for the March board meeting and will send you a date/time later.) Next Steps: 1) Attend the Mindful Land Use Solution Session to help us develop a presentation – see info below.
2) Attend the County Commissioners Meeting – TBA
XIII.4.14. There shall be a minimum square footage of 900 square feet for a residence. (There has been much controversy and debate over the Planning Commission’s procedures and process.  We made it clear to the County Commissioners that our requests to provide a presentation and/or have an interactive dialogue have not been met.  In addition, the Planning Commission has not been forwarded all of your letters, so this will happen as a result of yesterday’s meeting. Please feel free to forward your letters to our email crestoneenergyexchange@gmail.com so that we also have a copy on file. We will attend tomorrow’s meeting to confirm a presentation time & date for March.) Next Steps:
1) Attend the Mindful Land Use Solution Session to help us develop a presentation – see info below.
XIII.4.15. Accessory structures are not permitted on vacant parcels until a permitted residence is completed. (i.e. greenhouses, hoop houses, garages, storage sheds, shipping containers, outbuildings of any type, studio, carports, etc.).  Agricultural structures being used strictly for agricultural use may be exempt. (The language will be changed to allow accessory structures with a permit once construction and sewage disposal permits are in place.  This was a huge success, so thank you for demonstrating how important it is to have a structure to keep tools and building materials safe from the weather and theft while you are under construction.)
No Next Steps Needed:

In an effort to provide more information, education and creative solutions to the Planning Commission and County Commissioners, our Mindful Land Use Solutions committee will resume hosting Solution Sessions throughout the County. If you are interested in helping us with research and developing a presentation to address the underlying issues of increasing minimum square footage and eliminating alternative sewage disposal systems, please join us for our next session.
