On Sunday 05/08/2011, at approximately 5:20pm the 911 Center in Alamosa received a report of a hiker that found an abandoned camp site about a mile and a half above the North Crestone Campground within Saguache County.
The hiker found a backpack that contained numerous items that included a Georgia Driver’s License that belonged to Abisha Mounce (age 38) from Atlanta, Georgia.  Mounce had been reported missing in November of last year.
Saguache County Deputies found Mounce’s vehicle parked at the North Crestone Trailhead in October.
Saguache County Deputies, along with several search and rescue agencies, and dogs searched the area to no avail in November.
Monday (05/09/2011) morning, Saguache County Deputies, Saguache County Search and Rescue, Division of Wildlife, Saguache County Coroner’s Office, and two cadaver dogs from the Colorado Search and Rescue Dogs searched the area.
The campsite was located and items were recovered that had belonged to Abisha Mounce.  Near the campsite, partial skeletal remains were discovered by one of the dog teams.
The remains were removed from the site and will be taken to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office for further investigation.  Investigators hope to extract DNA that may be compared to a family member in Georgia for positive identification.  It is unknown how long this will take to complete.
Although it is suspected the remains are of Abisha Mounce, it will has not been confirmed and the cause of death may never be determined.
